His MIghty Majesty King Figaro: An Update
Dec. 4th, 2008 02:50 pmThank you everyone for keeping Figaro in your thoughts.
What we know so far is that he does not have diabetes. He does have some arthritis in his rear legs and some thickening of the bowel wall. That could possibly mean inflammatory bowel disease. We're still waiting for lab results to come in that will tell us if he's got thyroid issues or cancer- the two major culprits in major weight loss muscle degradation. The IBD could also be causing it as an inflamed bowel will not absorb nutrients. We have him on special food and steroids to help with the IBD. If it turns out to be IBD, then it's a manageable condition. If it's his thyroid, it's manageable. If it's cancer, I have no idea.
After we got him home from the vet, he got even worse, to the point where he couldn't even stand up. Jacquelyn and I were up with him most of the night. He finally curled up under the desk in our bedroom and slept. When I woke up to get Ethan ready for school, he had moved. I ran through the house and found him int he kitchen waiting for breakfast. He ate, drank, and pooed. He's still very wonky on his feet and still falling down but he's a bit better than his worst last night. He's stuck to his usual daily schedule - sleeping.
I'll keep everyone posted as things develop. It's a very difficult position not knowing if he's going to get better or not. It's a strange balancing act of being optimistic and hopeful that he will get better yet preparing ourselves for the worst. Jacquelyn has had Figaro for eight years and she is quite naturally torn and devastated. This has been kind of a shit couple of months for her and this is definitely not helping.
Wish us luck and keep those good thoughts coming.
