Waiting for Morning

Fifteen minutes of destiny left
before the child must wake for school
and leave his pillow and self behind
on a bed he made without my help.
One last line, a refrain to sing
to pass the time and ease my mind
that I have made a long night's work
of progress, creative, intrepid worth.
It's not quite right and not enough
that I write these lines without a hook,
a wriggle of bait to catch myself
and the reader to reel us in.
Five more minutes and one more verse
is just enough for a second's remorse
to fall into rhyme and wonder why
I wrote this before the dawn had broke.
