MEET THE NEW POPE!

Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger

Cardinal Ratzinger has been head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - formerly known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition - since 1981.

One of his first campaigns was against liberation theology, which had gained ground among priests in Latin America and elsewhere as a means of involving the Church in social activism and human rights issues.

He has described homosexuality as a "tendency" towards an "intrinsic moral evil". During the US election campaign, he called for pro-choice politicians to be denied Communion.

Ooh, don't forget he was in the Hitler Youth when he was 14.

I heard it on the radio this morning. Something like he was recruited when he was 14 but then defected in his 20s.

w.t.f......

pope's shouldn't be former hitler youth. i don't care if it was just to avoid getting shot in the head, it should still disqualify.

"Ratzinger's past includes brief membership of the Hitler Youth movement and wartime service with a German army anti- aircraft unit."

And this is the SPIRITUAL LEADER of 1.1 BILLION PEOPLE!!!!

i just don't see my best friends' family and my good buddy jason following an ex-nazi as their spiritual leader. i think that kind of thing would disenfranchise a LOT of people. the times article emphasizes they don't know if he committed atrocities or not, i'm not convinced that it MATTERS.

is there a way to get a recall vote on the pope?

No recall. He's got the job till he's dead. I've said it before, I'll say it again, "He's the buttplug in an already constipated Christianity."

It always fascinates me how caught up non-Catholics get in the papacy; and what a big deal was made in the media when he died. I thought the whole point of Protestantism was because people didn't /want/ a pope? I also love how this guy's a spry 78 years old. I wonder what the median age from the pool of applicants was?

I wouldn't even pay attention except that this man is now the spritual leader of 1.1 billion people. That's kind of a big deal :P

I think there's some rule that you can't be Pope if you can still get an erection, so I'm guessing the pool of candidates was pretty up there age wise (or they were really drunk!)

Oh, I wasn't referring to you, but rather to a lot of the people I was around when he died who didn't go to church and weren't Catholic, but got really caught up in how "sad" it was that he died. And the media was all over it. 1.1 billion Catholics? That's more than I would have guessed, wow...

They've almost got a monopoly in South America and Africa now. Europe is going more secular, but America is in a religious upswing.

This Pope thing is just like any international figure dying. Look how many people flipped out when Princess Di died and she was the just the ex-wife of British royalty. Mother Theresa makes a bit more sense, but it seems cut from the same cloth.

When Princess Di died my mom was all upset, and my dad said "If it were Mother Theresa, then I'd care." Two days later...

That's a pretty amazing 'coincidence'. Did your Dad get upset when she died then?

I think we may be able to expect a good show from this pope while he lasts. He doesn't look like he'll last too long.

The papal office is certainly one of the most important entertainment-related jobs around. I'm still annoyed that I haven't been selected yet. Next time.
