Can I just say for a moment how absolutely tired I am of hearing this overblown rhetoric about how a watered-down, corporate-friendly, middle-of-the-road health care insurance reform bill is a socialist, communist, government takeover of health care?  Last I checked, after this bill passed, the insurance companies, the doctors, the hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies, and the various technology companies are still in private hands.  Last I checked, all of those companies are going to continue to make obscene profits.  Seriously, you guys can't simultaneously claim that Obama is a socialist communist AND a corporate, Wall Street-loving fascist.  He can't be both, you dumb sons-of-bitches.  Obama is a center-left, free-market, capitalist-friendly Democrat.  He's not an FDR.  I wish he was an FDR.  He's a Bill Clinton.  Shit, he's a second-term Woodrow Wilson.  But you sir, are no FDR.

From our point of view over here in Germany the debate going on is borderline hilarious. We had a socialist government right next door for 40 years and as a friend who grew up in the GDR pointed out, it was not even close to the welfare state that was/is the FRG.

Wait. So Soviet tanks are not going to start blocking the highways to make sure every woman has at least one abortion?

Fuck. I was looking forward to that.

You are right on the money as usual, but I personally feel like he is less of a Clinton and more of an FDR than you rank him, because whereas most of the way that he accomplishes his major federal agendas is within a status-quo framework and via compromise and pragmatism a la Clinton, the way in which he's just going down the list checking off big things that need to happen according to his campaign policy speeches and telling people it's gonna suck but it needs to happen and actually signing things into law that physically effect aspects of myself and my parents' daily life is pretty FDR.
Still, this package is the 1993 GOP package, and the total cotton-earing and tongue-pointing of the Republicans is fucking disgusting and retarded and shameful right now.
