President Obama at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner last night, discussing false claims made about the health care reform bill, told a little anecdote.

"I was up at the G20 -- just a little aside -- I was up at the G20, and some of you saw those big flags and all the world leaders come in and Michelle and I are shaking hands with them," the president said. "One of the leaders -- I won't mention who it was -- he comes up to me. We take the picture, we go behind.

"He says, 'Barack, explain to me this health care debate.'

"He says, 'We don't understand it. You're trying to make sure everybody has health care and they're putting a Hitler mustache on you -- I don't -- that doesn't make sense to me. Explain that to me.'"

Asked who this was, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs would say only "a world leader."

I don't get it either.  This country has the dumb.

Even though I hated the hell out of Bush, I would never call him Hitler (despite the fact that he went to war due to his religious and personal beliefs which I also believe were Hitler's reasons on starting WWII and killing all the Jews, BUT YOU KNOOWWW). People are really... uh... uneducated.

At least with Bush, there was *some* actual analogy there - preemptive war, fear-mongering against an ethnic group, just to name a couple.

This makes no sense what so ever.

Actually, it's much better to compare Bush to the pre-Mussolini Italian fascist movement. It largely consisted of rural, conservative religious people who were incensed that big city liberals were advocating things like democracy and women's rights. They were also completely terrified of a big bad external communist boogieman that they believe mandated an extremely militaristic, nationalist response in order to defeat.

Forget swine flu - I want a dumb vaccination for everyone. The dumb is way more contagious, apparently.

And we thought our reputation would improve after Obama's election. Sigh.

That's the thing - during the Bush years America was hated, but most people seemed to believe that Americans were still good people and our government had been hijacked by some cowboys.

Now, we have a leader who is not a cowboy jackass and people are starting to like America again, only to be presented by how angry and misinformed and misguided a portion of the populace is.

You just can't win.

I wonder if it was Nicolas Sarkozy? I'm going to assume yes and read it in his accent.

Sadly, it couldn't have been my president because he doesn't speak english, and because he's too preoccupied with how awfully he's handled the econimic crisis to be, you know, articulate. Apart from the fact that he's not a world leader, strictly speaking.

But yes. People are dumb.

As far as I can tell, anything the average American doesn't understand and/or is told to hate by their community leaders (by which I mean neo-conservative religious leaders) = undemocratic and evil = Nazi / communist!

I mean, universal healthcare? How unamerican is that?
