Oh no, even though he had just gone to bed and his light was off I busted in there, flipped on the light and was all HEY YOUR FACEBOOK!

Jacquelyn then shooshed me out and Ethan filled her in on all the details. Apparently Jacquelyn had to have to gossip first :)

He said he was going to tell me eventually. It was probably easier to just let me see it that way.

It is weird.

Well, at least you're apparently not on a "limited profile only" or something!

Wow, go Ethan. : ) It was only a matter of time.

That's got to be a weird way to find out, but I guess it saves him having to bring it up.

My dad found out through face book that I have boyfriends INSTEAD of girlfriends. It could be worse.

PS
LOVE the new lay out, LOVEIT

Yay for first girlfriend!
Boo for Facebook ruining his secret! Sort of! Time for some honest talkings?

I had a cousin show my uncle a picture of me smoking a hookah that I had on facebook. my uncle then showed my dad the picture. I had to convince my parents that I was not on drugs and it was only flavored tobacco. effin cousins!

I bet he'll come around with more info if you give him time. and I bet you you'll be the first to know (without facebook) when that girl breaks his heart.

My thoughts exactly.

(I do think it's a little funny that Jacquelyn shooed you out of the room to get the details first.)

Ah - parenting in the land of Facebook. We have a bit of a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in our house.

I wouldn't know much about my daughter and her kids if not for MySpace. It does serve a purpose!

Yeah, I think it was easier for him that way. We talk a lot and are pretty open with communication, but the whole girlfriend thing is always awkward. I have to not make jokes about it in any way though. I was teased mercilessly or humiliated when I was young about these things and it was one of the defining factors in the lack of trust I have toward my family.

Thanks! I'm quite proud of the new layout as well. I think I'll keep it for a bit :D

I've been quite open with Ethan that boyfriends are just fine but he has assured me that he likes the ladies.

How'd your dad take it? Not well, I suppose?

I think that's smart. It's embarrassing and confusing enough trying to figure out all that growing up he has to do without having people make him feel stupid for it. Puberty already makes us all feel stupid enough.

That's horrible that they would do that to you, though I guess I can't say I'm surprised from what you've told me. : /

The internet rules are that I have full open security settings for his profile and know his passwords - just in case. He's said that almost all of his friends have their parents on the FBs. As he gets older and more mature, the level of transparency will lessen. Maybe I'm overprotective, but I know the shit *I* got into when his age and well...

Oh no, it was no big deal.
We hadn't spoken in over a year and a half, and he called to ask why facebook said I was "interested in men" and wanted to know if it meant the gay.
It was really awkward and uncomfortable for him, but he was trying to be supportive.
I thought it was funny, it brought us closer together, we talk more now.

I'm all invasive and overprotective - I require full profile and security access, as well as his passwords. I don't go snooping or anything but it's a just-in-case factor. As he gets older and more mature, I'll be less involved and his online life can be more opaque.

Did you ever decide what to do about your parental FBing?

I wasn't mad or anything. I just went in there to find out if it was true. WHY IS YOUR FACEBOOK SAY U IN A RELATIONSHIP?!

Cuz I am.

Jacquelyn: SO IT'S TRUE?! GET OUT! (closes door.)

It's pretty odd. I feel like I am in a way, way too young to be the parent of someone who is dating. My memories of changing his diapers are way too fresh in my head.

We talk honest quite a lot. I think this was his way of telling me without having to all, Uh, hey, Dad..." since no matter the closeness, relationship talk between kids and parents is a little awkward, methinks.

But yeah, part of me is YAY! and part of me is ONOES!

Obviously he's a little embarrassed since it's a big shift in maturity and whatnot, but it will be fine. I think it was easier for him to publicly display it than to bring it up out of nowhere.
