What you were doing when?

Today is Inauguration Day. I watched the coverage on CBS in the packed cafeteria of my school. People roared, cried, clapped, and laughed. And I with them. I even teared up when Joe Biden took his oath of office. The emotion was overwhelming when Obama took his. There is a strange contradiction of feeling in the air today, as if this momentous occasion contains both weight and buoyancy. As if you were about to be devoured by slavering demons but then woke up - relieved to find you were dreaming - but then realized you have a terrible hangover and Dick Cheney is sleeping next to you, naked and spooning.
As of today, we kick Cheney out of bed, out of our homes. We drink some water. We take some aspirin. We will have a nice healthy breakfast. Our hangovers will vanish. We clean up the vomit and broken bottles, the detritus of irresponsibility and excess. We have challenges ahead and we swear, we take a solemn oath that we are never going to put ourselves in this situation again.
Good luck, President Obama. You are going to need it.

Test for Echo
Date: 2009-01-20 05:59 pm (UTC)This is a very refreshing post.
I live in North Texas, and spend a great deal of time on the internet. Both of those things seem to be pretty adept at sucking the joy out of me- I don't even really feel comfortable expressing my joy in my own journal, because I know it will bring out the jaded, snarky, asshole in otherwise rational human beings.

Date: 2009-01-20 06:07 pm (UTC)It isn't the man that's important, it's the archetype, it's the energies, it's the massive collusion of will in the power of progress. Symbols are so much more powerful than people.
I kind of feel sorry for the people who can't feel this, can't sense what's going on. Cynicism has to be so boring. :D

Date: 2009-01-20 06:28 pm (UTC)We had a company-wide announcement that we were allowed to watch wherever we could find a tv or computer. I sat in my cube and listened to cnn streaming radio and watched msnbc video with the sound off. It was nice to have the privacy because I was running the gamut from crying to smiling. : ) It was a beautiful speech and it's a beautiful day. I wish my grandma had been alive to see it!
