I will be lucky if I clear thirty books this year. I'm at about seventeen or eighteen right now. I barely read this summer. It took me almost two months to read The Shock Doctrine. Not because it is a dense book, (actually, it's amazingly brilliant and think everyone should read it right effing now) but once it was nice out, I rode my bike everywhere and in the cold months, the bus is my primary reading time. Next, I went to Salt Lake for my surgery and my pain & drug regiment kept my attention span down to the length of a short commercial. It is really only in the last couple weeks I've been able to start reading again. Now, I have a ton to catch up on and guess what? School started and I've got several hours of reading each week for my classes. Can't a book lover catch a break?!
We still haven't heard anything about our dead neighbor. He hasn't even been in the obituaries.
My financial aid should be here any day now.
Today is my day off from both school and work. I've got a two-page paper to write for Lit and reading to do if my school books miraculously arrive in the mail today. In the meantime, I'm going to be cleaning up as much as I can muster the energy for. With Jacquelyn's stress fracture keeping her from doing much of anything, it's been difficult to keep up. I'm still not at 100% from my surgery. Though I feel much better, my energy levels and stamina are pretty low, which just complicates things. In order to keep going with working thirty hours per week, plus taking thirteen credits, plus all of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, et cetera, it would be awesome if I was back at full operating capacity.
Hopefully Jacquelyn's two months on crutches will give her fracture time to heal. I loathe the idea of her trying to get around on crutches in the ice and snow. Madison is notorious for their absolute crap job of shoveling, plowing, and icing. Also, Mr. Winter, Dear Jack Frost,: Stay the Fuck Away From Wisconsin This Year. We Had Enough Of Your Shit Last Year. I want to ride my bike into January.
I miss Robert Anton Wilson. Depending on one's Belief System (BS!), he's worm food, or in Heaven, or rejoined with the Collective Consciousness, or has been reincarnated as a small child in Madagascar, or maybe as a cat.. All of which are fine and dandy, some of which are more comforting than others, but knowing he was running around on Earth was a comfort to me. I feel the same way about Kurt Vonnegut and Hunter S. Thompson. The fact that these three are no longer with us scares me to death, as if they were some sort of idealistic gatekeepers, holding back the throngs of fear and idiocy.
Nothing tastes better than home-grown tomatoes. We have a nice, steady supply of our own heirloom tomatoes from our garden and they are awesome. Last night, I made a delicious caprese salad with our own tomatoes and basil (I still can't make my own fresh mozzarella!) Store-bought tomatoes don't taste like anything at all in comparison. Can I grow tomatoes in the house, year round?
All right, back to lunch and laundry. Lunch, laundry, and tea. Lunch, laundry, tea, and shower. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Date: 2008-09-10 05:18 pm (UTC)Reading is harder post-relay. I think I've gotten through maybe 10 books this year? I feel much less deep and thoughtful as a result, which blows. I do plan to read The Shock Doctrine though, between you and Rachel Maddow I'm pretty sold.
If we have another winter like last winter... ugh. Just no. I hope Jacquelyn heals before snow flies. As for biking into January, Ray did that last year- you just need to get some studded tires for your bike and some serious cold weather gear and you'll be set (but frigid).
As far as cooking, would it be helpful/not overly presumptuous if I brought you guys a casserole or something? Seems like it might take off a bit of the strain for a little while, anyway.
The world became a sadder place when Mr. Vonnegut passed on. He kept my faith that people can be good alive. At least he wrote a lot so we can keep bits of him.

Date: 2008-09-11 07:12 pm (UTC)I just ate through four books in the last three weeks, so there may be some hope for me after all.
I won't bike that far. Maybe into November, but once the morning temperature starts getting below 40, there's no way.
A casserole sometime would always be welcome. I'm back to normal, minus the endurance bit, so it's not vital, but who am I to argue against food? Food is mighty and I am not!

Below 40 is too cold to do anything except cower. Ugh.
Food is mighty indeed. Imma call you in a bit maybe.

Also you can google "grow tomatoes upside down" for directions on how to a) make your own and/or b) make them for outside gardening too.
