I'm writing a post even though I should read some more and go to sleep.  Yeah, I'm hardcore like that.

This evening was spent in the company of [profile] kiwikat  and later [profile] shevus .  We ate food and talked and played Scruples and MarioKart.  It was all good times.  Also, we called Barriques so that I would know how it is properly pronounced.  Then we played reverse-strip poker where if you lose, you have to put more clothes on.  Just kidding.  I made up that last part.

Today is the first day I've woken up and was not absolutely miserable from pain.  That came later after a long day of driving taxi.  It's been exactly one month since my surgery.  That's a month of Vicodin and sleeping on the couch.  I've also lost 15 pounds this month.  I guess that ain't all bad.  P.S. I really miss riding my bike.  P.P.S.  Extra time to read on the bus is pretty nice.

I've been reading Robin Hobb's The Liveship Traders trilogy.  It's pretty good.  Her writing is a bit rough, or at least her editor is kind of sucky, but the characters and plot are fairly solid.  Hobb has a knack for not going where yuo think she'll go, which is refreshing.  Plus, for fantasy, she borrows very little from the genre, which makes her world and story very unique.  I'm about halfway through the second book and will probably read it when I'm done typing here.  Yeah.

Yesterday, one of my passengers was complaining that the two brand-new Mercedes that he ordered from Europe aren't coming for 18 months because the American model has to be out in the U.S. for six months before he can legally import them.  Such a tough life, I pity the fool.

Yesterday was Jacquelyn and my three-year anniversary.  Jacqui's up in Minneapolis doing science so we'll celebrate when she gets back.  This month has been so hectic, I'm sad to admit that I *almost* forgot.  Plus, the Vicodin makes me dumb and my memory faulty.  Have I mentioned how awesome Jacquelyn is?  PRETTY EFFING AWESOME.  I am a lucky dude.

Evidence that Vicodin makes me dumb: Jacquelyn and I went out to dinner at Brocach.  I meant to order a Spotted Cow (awesome beer, seriously) and my waiter brought me a Guinness.  I don't really drink Guinness.  I never order Guinness.  But apparently in the space between my brain and my lips, my mouth decided I needed Guinness.  Which was fine, because it was damn fine beer and went very well with my bangers & mash.

Months ago, I picked up a British writer on his first day in Madison.  Today, I picked up he and his entire family to take them to the airport back to Britain.  He remembered me, asked about my writing - I asked about his.  We both have kids that want us to write them books.  He didn't think I looked old enough to have a thirteen-year old.  He asked a few more questions about my family and past and told me I really need to write a memoir.  Maaaaaybe.

Sincerely,
Jack

P.S.  That means this is the end.

A couple of nights ago, we went out for drinks with a friend. S. and Xabi ordered non-alcohol cocktails and I ordered a Bloody Mary. I got a red drink and started sucking it through the straw, thinking it was pretty weak. I was half through it when the waitress came, apologizing profusely for giving me the wrong drink - I had been sipping a non-alcohol wild berries something or other cocktail. And I wasn't even on Vicodin.

Congrats again on your anniversary, that's pretty damn spiffy.

I'm still disappointed that goog411 couldn't find Barriques for you. : ( They're not good when the name is even slightly wonky. They couldn't find Clausen's for me last week. I'm glad you came, I had a really good time.

What was that book you said I should read? I need something good to take along to DC.

I only like Guiness in Irish car bombs and I think you could write a very interesting memoir if you put your mind to it (and had sufficient free time).

Important note: don't order Irish car bombs in the UK.

You should read A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke, which is that hilarious book I was telling you about. I also have Vonnegut's Armageddon in Retrospect if you want to borrow that as well.

!!!

They might find that just a smidge insensitive.

I will request that book right now, gosh! And yes I would love to borrow Armageddon in Retrospect, pleaseandthanks! Is there a day when you are less busy when I could come get it?

I also own A Year in the Merde, so you can come by and borrow either or both of them uh, almost anytime today or tomorrow or Sunday or the weekdays in the evenings.

Probably. I don't think I have any plans then. If I do and have forgotten, I'll call. Otherwise, I'll see you then!

Works for me! As long as I don't completely oversleep and wake up at 1pm I should be good for it.

Because there have been a lot of *real* Irish car bombs, like real cars blowing up because of the IRA and whatnot. It would be a wee bit insensitive.

ohhhhhhhhhhh.

Guinness is awesome on-tap, in a cold mug/glass. Otherwise, I don't really like it. It's odd :P

Beer & wine are my favs. Hard alcohol isn't my friend for the most part. I can definitely handle it sometimes, like margaritas and martinis.

Glad you like the Liveship books. I think they are spectacular.

Happy anniversary!

Yup, I slept until 11 this morning :P I never sleep that late. Technically, I woke up at 7, checked my email and fed the cats, but then I started reading again and passed right out :) Yesterday and today, I've felt pretty decent in the morning and haven't had to take as many Vicodin as in previous days. (A month ago, when I got out of the hospital, I was taking 15mg of hydrocodone every 3 to 4 hours, and now I've worked my way down to 5mg every 4 to 5 hours.)

Hobb has a bad habit of repeating phrases but otherwise she's great :D

Thanks!

Firstly, be wary of having too many Irish Car Bombs as they can lead to unforeseen circumstances (for example our little miss Phe).

Secondly, a Guinness with a shot of espresso and a twist of lemon rind is a phenomenal thing.

Thirdly, Jacquelyn is mighty damn awesome.

Fourthly, "Green is its color."
