I'm thinking of a setting for a story.  Take this quote from Milton Friedman: "Only a crisis... produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around." and add it to the the word "religion," from the Latin religio, meaning "bind together." Religion binds people, forming communities.  Then, add an apocalyptic event.  What this equals is a world where everything is wiped out and the ideas lying around will be these small doomsday cults, bound together by their cult leaders.  They will multiply.  They will go from being a small minority to a vast majority.  I'm thinking this could make a very scary place.

Not even everything need be wiped out; just a major event (like the rising of the sea levels) which is explained by various religious groups ("God" got angry and drowned everything except for Noah et al.).

Most religions about today are doomsday cults, in that they believe in an end of days/apocolypse/reckoning of some sort. The timeline may be longer than what we think of as doomsday cults, but the whole 'you better be on our side when the end comes' jive is what brings in the members in both cases. And yes, the fact that these people are now a vast majority is very frightening indeed.

On another, only semi-related note, I was looking forward to seeing your BLITEOTW post -- you're an amazing writer and I think you could do the topic extremely well. I'm late on posting mine (I think it was supposed to be the 13th) but I'm waiting til the 27th for various reasons. Want to join me in the tardy posters guild?

I like this idea. Also what if the other survivor is one or a group of scientists who could have actually stopped the doomsday if only people like this religious cult would have listened to them. Here you are where some good ideas are still around and yet even more likely to be ignored.
