jackshoegazer: (LJ/Fight Club)

[profile] explodingalice hit me up for the five-interest/three-icon meme.  Here are the results:

The INTERESTS:

0 = 2: is a mathematical statement of metaphysical belief that though things appear divided (yin/yang), they are actually one (Tao), or rather Nothing. Often expressed with this little ditty: 00 = 0n-n = 0n ÷ 0n = (0n ÷ 1) × (1 ÷ 0n). 0n ÷ 1 = 0; but 1 ÷ 0{n} = . The clash of the infinitely big with the infinitely small. It is a super simple expression of one of the ways I view the structure of the universe. And thus it is cool.

Bright Eyes: is the current musical project of indie darling Conor Oberst, who has been writing great songs since he was like 14. A lot of people give him shit for a) being an indie darling b) being arguably sort of emo c) hordes of screaming girls and d) writing songs that have much more age and wisdom in them than some people feel is capable for his age. To all of this, I say, "Bugger off. The man writes great songs, his lyrics are heavy with clever and heartfelt metaphors, he experiments with a lot of production styles, and like all truly good songwriters, he takes the mundane and makes it universal."

Enochian: is an "angelic" language, recorded way back in the 16th century by Dr. John Dee (mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, occultist, and consultant to Queen Elizabeth I) and Edward Kelley (convicted criminal, spiritual medium, and alchemist.) According to Dee's journals, Enochian was supposed to have been the language God used to create the world, and which was later used by Adam to speak with God and the angels, and to name all things in existence. Adam then lost the language upon his Fall. It was "recovered" by Dee, using Kelley as a scryer, though only partial English translations existed in Dee's notes. I'm a huge fan of all things esoteric and occult (in the literal sense - occult means "hidden") and especially the history thereof.

Morgan Stewart's Coming Home: is a 1987 Jon Cryer movie about the son of a senator who spent his life in boarding school but is brought home so his dad can run a "family values" campaign. He's a weirdo and a horro-movie fan and doesn't fit in and all kinds of horrible awkwardness ensues. "Are you on drugs?" "Yes, I have to admit. I've been freebasing Clearasil." It wouldn't be an 80's movie if there wasn't a corrupt ass trying to ruin his dad's campaign which Jon Cryer must defeat and save the day, of course. I loved it when I was growing up. This rare movie and Ferris Bueller were definitely influential in my young impressionable days.

Scientific Illuminism: is the subtitle of The Equinox, a series of publications in book form that serves as the official organ of the A.'.A.'., the mystical order of Aleister Crowley.  The motto of the A.'.A.'. is The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion, thus approaching the exploration of spiritual reality with the same rigor and standards that science tackles other fields.  It was one of the first attempts to bridge science and religion and, I thought, did very well.

The ICONS:

Hunter S. Thompson was one  of the writers that really encouraged me to write.  Not personally.  He didn't pat me on the shoulder and say, "Hey, Jack, write a goddamn firebrand of a novel!"  But after I read him, I really felt like I could.  Thus, I use this  icon for writing projects, especially edgier ones.

I rarely use this icon, but I love it nonetheless.  It is from the camping trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan that I took with Jacquelyn and Ethan two summers ago.  It was a great time.  We played in Lake Superior, which looked like the ocean.  We visited weird small-town museums of local history.  We burned a lot of wood.  I really miss it.  Hopefully we'll get some camping in this summer.  Last summer was a bit of a wash.

Oh Billy Mack!  "Hi kids.  Don't buy drugs.  Become a pop star, they give you them for free!"  He is my favorite character from Love Actually and this is the best line of naughties I've ever heard uttered in a film.  When I make a mistake, this is the line that runs through my head.  As you may imagine, LJ provides much opportunity for its use.

You forgot my favorite critique of CO/BE - he sings off-key on purpose! :P

I thought I sort of covered that with the "production styles" since I *like* that part. It's not like he does it with every song, just the ones it works for. If he sang off-key because he didn't know any better, then he'd be a crap musician. If you fuck up on purpose, artistically, then it's cool. But to each their own ;)

I really love that Hunter S. Thomspon icon, in case I've never mentioned it. I also saw a Thompson icon in your recent batch of icons posted at [livejournal.com profile] iconomicon that I kind of liked. And your Fight Club icon in this post, hah. Such great icons. :D

Also, this just made me think I should look in to Bright Eyes. I've never heard or read any of the lyrics, but if you say they're full of age and wisdom, I should really listen to a song or two. (: Do you have any personal favorites?

Thompson's one if my favorite iconographic targets. There can never be too many HST icons floating around.

Here are some of my fav BE songs...

Sunrise, Sunset
At the Bottom of Everything
We are Nowhere and it's Now
Lua
First Day of My Life
Bowl of Oranges
Waste of Paint
Method Acting
False Advertising

Sorry, it's hard to narrow it down. Maybe I'll zip up some songs and post them when I get home.

I always thought that HST icon was in fact Johnny Depp as the good Doctor.

It is, it is! I consider Depp roughly equivalent to Hunter since even Hunter said Depp was a weird doppleganger who lived in his house, wore his clothes and stole part of his personality. Plus, the film version of F&LiLV is such an amazing achievement in the realm of Books That Can't Ever Be Films.

Oh, agreed and understood - did you read the new bio of HST? Gonzo, I think it's called? Depp wrote the foreword and is quoted in the book, especially towards the end of the good Doctor's life. I used to think Depp was just some doofy teen idol - then I saw him in a couple Burton flicks and *especially* Fear and Loathing and just totally revised my opinion.

I always knew Depp was good - he purposely dived into more esoteric and odd roles because he hated that whole TeenBeat aspect of his post-21 Jump Street fame. The first movie he did post-21JS was a John Waters film :)

Yeah, but in my mind I always kinda had this mental association of Depp = pretty boy, 21 Jumpstreet. I'm glad that's behind me now though... he's a completely awesome guy, from what I read.

Cool! I have now learned something, added an artist to my amazon wishlist, added a movie to my Netflix queue (they don't have the Cusack flick), and learned more about you. Thanks!!!

Feel free to ask mine, if you so desire.

I've recorded that part of Love Actually on my phone and set it as my ring tone. It's just plays over and over: "FUCK WANK BUGGER SHITTING ARSE HEAD AND HOLE... pause...FUCK WANK BUGGER SHITTING ARSE HEAD AND HOLE... pause...FUCK WANK BUGGER SHITTING ARSE HEAD AND HOLE... pause...FUCK WANK BUGGER SHITTING ARSE HEAD AND HOLE... pause..."

I love the mathematical statement. I am snagging it for future use :)

Also for cryptic languages, I think my favorite is Ogham. Granted, it's not an invented language but it will trip people up -- looks nothing at all like words.
