Is there a word for that sound that we make when we clear our throats?  I can't think of one, so I'm going to make one up.  How about "kluhc"?  Works for me.

The point being, my Intro to Film instructor kluhcs after every two or three words.  "So (kluhc) this semester we'll be (kluhc) starting with the, uh, various (kluhc) elements of film before (kluhc) moving on to (kluhc) the international (kluhc) film movement.  You are not an (kluhc) educated, literary person (kluhc) unless you've seen The (kluhc) Bicycle Thief."

Maybe he's just getting over a cold.  He sounded pretty nasally, so maybe it's just sinus problems but dear Lord, God in heaven, I hope it's not permanent because it is so amazingly annoying.

Otherwise, it should be a great class.  On Thursdays, we watch a movie and on the following Tuesday, we discuss them.  This semester, we'll be watching:

The Truman Show, Peter Weir (1998)
Citizen Kane, Orson Welles (1949)
Sliding Doors, Peter Howitt (1998)
Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock (1960)
The Wizard of Oz, Victor Fleming (1939)
Cabaret, Bob Fosse, (1972)
Roger & Me, Michael Moore (1989)
The Postman Always Rings Twice, Tay Garnet (1946)
Spellbound, Alfred Hitchcock (1945)
The Incredibles, Brad Bird (2004)
The Bicycle Thief, Vittorio De Sica (1948)
The Player, Robert Altman (1992)

I've seen quite a few of them already and I don't have to go to all of the screenings.  Probably the best news is that we can use the older edition of the textbook, which means I can order it from Amazon for 89 cents.  This semester is shaping up to be pretty sweet.  And I will cherish these memories during the semester I have to take algebra and chemistry.

The word you're looking for may be either "harrumph" of "halsening." The former implies clearing one's throat in a self-important manner. The latter is more making a harsh sound in one's throat.

Harrumph isn't it at all and halsening, while being a sound isn't onomatopoeic enough, like *cough* Hmmm, I'll have to look into this.

Sliding Doors! And Cabaret! Man, that must be one great class. No one I know seems to share my appreciation for Sliding Doors, they think it's just another Meg-Ryan-type film, are annoyed by Gwyneth Paltrow and sad that Hugh Grant isn't in it. I think it's funny, cute but not overly sappy, maybe even a tine bit more, ahem, profound than romantic comedies usually are. Or something.

I have to admit I had this prejudice about it, and what is even more revealing is that I didn't notice it when I skimmed the title list. My sister H likes it and she's only a fan of sappy romantic comedies and British mystery cinema, so I just assumed it fit in the former category. Consider me schooled!

I love Sliding Doors! Most people I know have never even heard of it. I'm so glad someone out there realizes what a great movie it was :o)

I've loved Sliding Doors since I first saw it way back in 1998. It's clever and funny, unlike most romantic comedies. For the same reasons, I really love Love Actually.

I LOVE the range of films selected. We can attend the cinema class at our local community college for free. It's held at the movie theater on Tuesday nights and community members are welcome to join the discussions.

I saw The Birds and Easy Rider on the big screen that way, and they were life-changing. As was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

You should see Monty Python & The Holy Grail on the big screen. That is a movie MADE for the BIG.

What a completely random selection of films. The run the gamut from brilliant to inappropriate in terms of choices for an intro class (or any film class in some cases). I'm interested to see where this guy is going. Oh and then there's this...

"You are not an educated, literary person unless you've seen The Bicycle Thief."

Sigh. I sense intellectual snobbery. It *is* a great movie -- it probably shows the state of post-war Europe better than any other film -- but you don't show it in an intro class. I saw it in my third year in the Italian Cinema course and all the thematic layers and cultural barriers were still a bit overwhelming.

He looks like a pretentious film snob, but the face that he's showing The Incredibles shows he at least has a sense of humor. The choices were pretty obvious: Sliding Doors for editing, Psycho for sound, Citizen Cane for cinematography, that sort of thing.

Wow - what a great lineup for a class. The film classes I looked into in school didn't have the same kind of flavor at all. Have fun (kluhc)!

During our early morning phone call (there's a nine hour difference!!) Madeleine mentioned that you emailed her. Thank you! It's awesome to have such a good circle of friends on lj.

those are some awesome movies! I think you'll really enjoy the class. As for the throat clearing thing. . .this season has been bad for those of us with sinus issues. He should clear up soon. At least I hope so for your sake!

Wait a minute. You live in Madison? That's very cool because I am planning on (possibly) going there to visit [livejournal.com profile] djafet this year. We ought to catch up!

I'll keep you posted as to my travel plans :)

I should keep better track of these things. Half my f-list could be in Madison and I'd never suspect it.

Have you ever been to that Inferno club I've heard so much about?

I've been there for a few techno/rave shows, but never for the infamous fetish nights.
