jackshoegazer: (Jack/Skeptical)
It's $2 latte day at Espresso Royale and I think the bitchy baristas are tied of making them because this is seriously the most overroasted, overbrewed, over-everything, nasty-ass latte I have ever had.  This is worse than Starbucks.  I'm going to drink it anyway.  Bad latte is better than no latte.

Jacquelyn is a couple doors down taking care of some banking stuff that has to be done before tomorrow.  Why tomorrow?  Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you!  She and I are going to her sister's wedding in Colorado.  This will be the maiden voyage of our new Subaru (over long distances, obviously.)  We have to run a bunch of errands today to get ready, (one of which is to go pick up my new suit - it's linen and quite sharp) so it's going to be a hectic and busy one.

Over this long weekend, I have to get a lot of homework started since when I get back, I'm only going to have one week of classes left before finals week.  Luckily I only have one cumulative final, in macroeconomics (for which we are allowed to compile one sheet, both sides, of notes.)  However, I have two papers due for anthropology and a chapbook for creative writing.  At least the chapbook I'm looking forward to.

Actually, one of the anthro papers I'm excited about.  We had to choose a topic and then find ethnologies about two different cultures in two different parts of the world, compare them and then compare them to our own culture.  I chose initiation rituals and I chose the Tamang in Nepal and the Doko of Ethiopia.  I really want to highlight how America doesn't exactly have any initiation rituals, or rather, initiation into our society is purely biological.  If you were born here, you're an American.

The really interesting part I found is that the Tamang shamanic initiation rituals are basically a form of psychotherapy and helps members of the society integrate and control what some would call psychotic episodes, schizophrenic attacks, et cetera.  Rather than looked down upon as they are in our society, something scorned, the ability to enter these states is praised and revered among the Tamang and the sufferers of these altered states are healthier and more able to function than those in our society because of this acceptance.

This latte is getting better the colder it gets.

Other big news - Ethan has started running track.  He's never really been interested in extracurricular activities (except brief forays into skateboarding club and yoga club) so I'm excited for him.  He's a fast runner and pretty determined.  I never participated in sports when I was in school (though I myself could run a mean 4.5 minute mile at my best) so I'm glad my apathy toward sports and aptitude toward scholastics had not deterred him.

He also told me a few weeks ago that he's thinking of becoming a police officer.  He doesn't want to be a beat cop, but more along the detective/FBI line of law enforcement.  How the hell this happened, I have no idea.  I told him that I worry about his safety, obviously but that I support any decision he is passionate about.  He's only 13 so we'll see how long this lasts.  This is however, the first time that video game designer isn't at the top of his list.

I wonder if I can make this post any longer.  Yes, yes I can.

I've been editing some of my older poems and reposting them to a poetry community.  They are getting quite a warm reception.  I think the graphical way I'm posting them is going to be my general format for my creative writing chapbook.  Here they are, if you're interested.

Charles Baker Hennington  |  Ironic Patriotic  |  Haunting  |  It's a Small Wonder  |  Aquatic

Okay, dear readers, I'll leave this at that.  Jacquelyn should be back very soon, I assume.  If not, i have plenty of time to sit here and write thoughtful replies to your comments.
