"Severus, please..."

Does Dumbledore seem like the kind of person to beg for his life? NOOOO.

I think he was asking Snape to kill him so Malfoy didn't have to. All along, Dumbledore knew what Malfoy & Snape were up to, knew about the Vow and the murder plan. DUmbledore knew he was close to death and sacrificed himself to save, (and I hate to say this) Draco Malfoy.

When Hagrid heard Dumbly and Snape arguing, it was because Dumbledore was telling Snape that if it came down to it, he was to kill Dumbledore, rather than let Malfoy do it. Snape was arguing that there was no way he'd kill Dumbledore; that he'd rather die from breaking his Unbreakable Vow than use the Killing Curse on Dumbledore.

When Snape burst onto the scene on the Astronomy tower, Dumbledore said, "Severus, please..." He was asking for Snape to kill him, not begging for his life. So Snape kills Dumbledore. That's why Snape got so angry with Harry for calling him a coward, because he sacrifices everything to spy on Voldemort and he was forced to kill Dumbledore.

Which means that Snape is even MORE noble, because he was arguing NOT to kill Dumbledore, which means he would have died for breaking the Unbreakable Vow.

Snape is on the good side still, as much as I hate what he did. This is why he didn't attack Harry at the end, merely deflected his spells. Even while Harry is attacking him, he's giving Harry advice (don't speak your spells, close your mind.) Snape was even impressed that Harry had used one of Snape's own spells. (And I suspected the HBP was Snape as soon as it was revealed that the HBP was good at potions) This also explains why Snape knew the exact spell to reverse the damage done to Malfoy in the bathroom.

Snape is NOT a nice person, but he is a MASSIVE example of someone doing what's right no matter how hard it is. I think in Book 7, we're going to find out exactly what Snape did to get Dumbledore's trust, and it's going to be HUGE. I also think Snape may end up sacrificing himself later, quite possibly to save Harry. As much as I loated what he did, I think he was under orders for it the whole time.

but [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] did yesterday. She pointed out a very thelemic view of the profecy that Dumberdore points out to Harry.

So, judging by your standards of no-spoilers-anywhere, how long does one have to wait to post opinions about a newly released book?

Date: 2005-07-19 03:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] niamh04.livejournal.com
I would say a month cause that gives all the kids enough time to have read it (for those who stretched out their reading around bedtime), and then by then her fans who couldn't wait and read the book in a day can discuss it too.

Oh well :) I have duties that must be attended to, which require that I have read and processed the book within 48 hours after release. Oh, and I'm a fanatic :P

You processed the book in 48 hours cause you couldn't wait! LOL We're big fans in my house, too, very big fans. I even have one of my best Tarot decks in a little HP carrier, my Enchanted Tarot deck. And the whole family was Harry, Hermionie, and well, I was one of the witches of the story for halloween. Wasn't too hard to pull off ;)

At first reading, I thought Snape was evil and had turned back to Voldemort, but the more I thought about the little inconsistencies with the Snape=Evil theory, I came to realize he wasn't. There's definitely more going on here.

You're welcome. Now I just hope I'm right, because if I'm not and Snape is evil, I'm going to feel like an ass for defending him. And then I'll be out for revenge :P

Well, wait, I suppose I should clarify whether we mean, "fits-on-a-desk" or "size-of-a-desk". All these wird arbitrary sizes get confusing, like those tiny candy bars that are "fun" size. Who knew fun was so small?!

LOL I think we're getting into murky waters here!
maybe fun is small but its still FUN!!!!

Followed your link from [livejournal.com profile] conuly's journal. ^^

Snape is NOT a nice person, but he is a MASSIVE example of someone doing what's right no matter how hard it is.

This is the Snape that I see in the books. And that's why I like him so much as a character; he's complex.

I definitely think that Snape's going to die in the last book. Hopefully, he'll redeem himself and show that he's not totally evil, because I think there's tons of room left for interpretation.

I've heard someone reason that Dumbledore's "Severus, please..." was not him begging Snape to kill him OR Dumbledore begging Snape not to kill him, but rather Dumbledore begging "Severus, please don't let me be wrong about you." They argued that the Killing Curse, or any Unforgivable, takes real will behind it, so Snape has to be truly evil.

I guess we'll see in a couple years.

See, I was just about to post something along the lines that with the Killing Curse don't you have to mean it. SO what does that tell us about Snape? Did he mean it, is he evil? Gah I don't know.
I want to hate him but for some reason I can't like him.
Thanks though.

I think Snape meant it, he had to, but the reason is different. He hated Dumbledore, not because he was good, or against Voldemort, but because he was self-sacrificial. H always did what was right, at whatever personal cost. This goes against all Slytherin traits, especially that of Save Yourself, eff everybody else. He hated Dumbledore for making him, forcing his hand, killing Dumbldore, and securing his position with Voldemort. Snape doesn't want any of this.

Date: 2005-07-20 08:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jackshoegazer.livejournal.com
Eh, I don't buy that one. I really think that this was an ongoing argument between Snape and Dumbledore, and that is what the Severus, please... was all about. Snape didn't want to do it. And that's where his look of scorn comes from, constantly doing what he doesn't want to do because it's what HAS to be done, a major theme in JK's books.

It seems we've come to the exact same conclusion on the Snape matter.

I must say, it was the best scene in all the books, at least in my opinion.

From: [identity profile] jackshoegazer.livejournal.com
Hmmm... very very close. I'll have to think very hard about my favorite scene in ALL the books. This book was VERY good though.
