Thank you Dinosaur Comics for reminding me that self-actualization is at the top of the hierarchy of needs. One must achieve other shit first. This is why philosophy was known as a rich-man's sport - one must be well fed and tended for the mind to contemplate the immaterial.

I remember a koan I read once that was very similar. When the seeker asked the wise man what enlightenment was, the wise man dropped his pack on the ground and the seeker was enlightened. "Now what?" the seeker asked. The wise man picked the pack back up and kept walking down the path.
