I basically stole Jacquelyn's post about this.

I joined the American Family Association mailing list a few years ago when they were protesting Kraft's advertising "support" of the Gay Olympics. The AMA is a right-wing, fundamentalist Christian hate group that gets up in arms about the "gay agenda." The problem is, they're a relatively successful group when it comes to organizing boycotts.  I have since used the e-mail list as a way to keep in touch with their latest campaigns, in order to call up and do the exact opposite of what they'd like: telling various companies that I support their advertising, or whatever.

The AMA's current "Action Alert" is targeting Heinz for an add featuring a gay family. The website is here, if you'd like to read more about the issue and sign up to be notified of future opportunities to thwart their hate-based campaigns (warning: there is some sick, hateful, twisted, un-Christian vitriol on this website).

A YouTube version of the ad is below. Please take a moment today to call Heinz's corporate headquarters toll-free and let them know you support them for using advertisements that feature non-hetero-normative families. Tell your friends! You may have to wait on hold for a bit, but remember that it's because of all the homophobic hate-mongers tying up the lines - don't give up!

HEINZ's number is 1-800-255-5750, or feel free to e-mail them (info here) instead (thanks, [personal profile] were_duck!). Then, tonight you can have a celebratory barbecue with your newly-purchased Heinz products!

See? What could be more despicable and evil than good, old-fashioned family values, like a loving parent who makes meals for their polite, well-behaved children, and kisses their hard-working spouse goodbye for the day?

I see nothing "overtly" homosexual about this advertisement. What I do see is the clever spin on mayo, with a New York Deli flavor- hence the deli cook. Maybe it's just me...

And I'm gay.

I can see where it may have been not "overt" but the point is that AFA is boycotting the company because of even implied support of THE GAY AGENDA.

Oh, I forget... the agenda! You know, I just don't have time to keep up with the activities of my fellow members of the Gay Mafia. ;)

Yeah, your fellow gays are taking over everything with your evil agenda to make everyone gay and thus wipe out the entire human race.

Oh, and don't forget the cool part: we can summon the Wrath of GAWD!

That's probably what's got the religious peeps all pissed. No matter what they do, God doesn't show Himself to them. You gays have a parade and God sends a hurricane!

Also, in case you haven't gotten your Gay Agenda Newsletter, you also want equal rights for marriage because that's the first step on the slippery slope to marrying children, animals, corpses, and various combinations thereof.

I should renew my subscription- apparently when I do, I get my very own Gay (Pocket) Agenda, complete with super fabulous stickers and a pink, marabou-feathered pen.

In medieval Europe (male) homosexuality was also thought to be the cause of earthquakes.

I also read that male homosexuality was considered virile and 'manly' in Roman times. No wonder Rome fell! :P

From what I've read, Romans considered men & women naturally bisexual; however, crossdressing males or other "effeminancy" was looked down apart; thus, as in U.S. prisons today, it was important and manly to Roman men to be the "insertive" partner in all sexual relations.

No, I wouldn't say it is "overt" either ... I think it is the heavy NY tough guy act that softens it a bit. However, those kids aren't calling him Al or anything, they're calling him Mum. I think that scared some folks, probably even more than the kissing bit.

I called them and thanked them when J posted this- and I just read an article that they've already pulled the ad.

(rage)

Well, grrr.

I'll call them anyway. But grrrr.

Spineless wankers.

Grrr! I wish companies would just stop pandering to irritatingly vocal minorities.

I know. I then called to retract my previous phone call. Don't know how much good that does, but I was pissed!

That commercial is the most awesome thing I have ever seen. Ever. In my whole life.

Ok, for a commercial. How sad is it that a commercial like that can make me teary-eyed at 7am, just for the ... potential ... that it represents? I'm re-posting this in my LJ, if ya don't mind. And calling when it's business hours.

It was a great commercial :) We shall mourn its loss.

o_o People read into things too much. Thank goodness the chef wasn't wearing a scarf or he'd be a terrorist, too!

My initial impression is that it was playing on the whole "kiss the cook" routine. But if I study it, I'm sure I'd notice turgid body parts and the sly implications of mayo. *gasp*

I mean, it's obvious that the attempt was to just replace the mom with a New Yorker, but dear Lord, don't call a man 'mum' or there will be hellfire damnation to pay :P.

YouTube has apparently pulled the clip.

They still have all those damn Rev> Wright clips up, but not this one.
