I will turn twenty-nine this summer. For those of you who are quick with the arithmetic, you might notice that I was born waaaay back in ultra-hip 1977. And for those of you who don't remember, the 70's bled right over into the 80's.

Trust me, I'm building toward something.

When I was about about four or five, my sister Angela was in the three to four range, and my half-sister Candice was chillin' out around a year or so. My father had recently gotten married, his second wife, Vicki.  This happy household was living in southern Indiana, in Columbus to be exact. I was soon to start kindergarten at Fodrea Elementary.

In a moment, I am going to show you our family photo from this miraculous time period but first I want to know; are our children going to look back on the haircuts and fashions of the 2000's and shudder, crying out, "Why, oh why, dear mother, dear father, did you dress me like that?!"

Because what we wear now doesn't seem terribly wrong or embarrassing in retrospect. But when I look back at this, I wonder what they were thinking back in winter of good ol' 1981.

this is what shits me about the 80s revival - I was there, I lived through it - for every funky piece of glitter shimmy there were 17 shades of baby shit brown; for ever great indie band like husker du or the cure, there were a million rip offs of the jacksons... and then there were the collars to your sholders. The green wool vests. The lame ass pink sweater draped around the sholders and sleeves tied in an oh so training to be a serial killer when I can dress myself kinda way.

i was born in '78 so my family photos aren't too far off. my mom was big into soap operas and so there are shoulder pads everywhere! oh man.

i often wonder how we're going to look back at what we're wearing now, say in twenty years. sometimes i think fashion has evolved as far as it can- evidenced by the current recycling of any and every era over and over again. really though i think it's just a current lack of mainstream creativity.

If you cut out everyone else, it totally looks like you ought to have been competing in a little kids' rodeo or country music competition. As a girl.

*smiles as sweetly as possible*

Unrelated, but...

Wooooow, gotta love the 80's man...I so feel your pain.
I think I'm gonna have to post some of my own here soon.
I've got some delectable little delights as well.
Heh heh...thanks for sharing.

The even scarier thing is that we would get 'dressed up' for family pictures like these...so, you know, that means the everyday clothes just went downhill from there.

Ahhh. The good ole days.

And yes, our children, who look simply spectacular now, will look back and cringe. They will have to have *something* to talk about in counseling!! ;)

I remember having a dress just like that yellow one, only with red and blue, and a Dorothy Hamill bowl cut. I cried an ocean at the hair dresser after that one. I'm sure their intentions were good. That's all I can say really.

I was born in 1976, so I too have my fair share of hideous clothing made immortal by photography.
I've always wondered why all dads looked like serial killers in the late 70s-early 80s.
:P
