According to America's Hidden War, Bush and Rumsffeld, but particularly Wolfowitz, were all for blowing the fuck out of every single nuclear installation that couldn't be accounted for or guaranteed as safe, including North Korea, Iraq, Iran (there's your axis), Libya, Syria and Pakistan, wiht nuclear tipped bunker busters under the idea that the US was in a state of emergency and imminent threat and this was the only way forward.. The book alledges that most of that 4 moth on the brink of nuclear war between Pakistan and India to dow ith Kashmir was deliberately stretched out to threaten Pakistan with nuclear war on two fronts, in oder to get Mushareff to stop protecting the intelligence forces that had created Al Quaeda and were shuffling them from country to country. Mushareff eventually realised he was fucked when the US secretly dropped troops into all its nuclear power and weapons facilities and began its own audit. However, at that state, Iran and the US were secretly negotiating which allowed US planes to land in an emergency in Iran, and Iran's govertment was fully supporting the US on its nuclear issues because it hated Pakistan and the Taliban - Shiit vs Pushtans etc. But something went wrong in the first 6 months of 2002, and ever since relations with Iran have crumbled. But, here's the biggie, the invasion of Iraq, according to this guy, is not set out as a warning signal to Iran - Iran is a stable regime that has helped the US against the Sunnis and would like nothing more than to take over from the US in Iraq and have its Shiite way. The cruncher is the war with Iraq was done because a) Saddam was being a prick which provided a very good way to b) permanently build bases in Iraq to control the Saudies, who are behind Al Quaeda every inch of the way, as opposed to Iran who hates bin Laden, and to prevent the spread of a pan-Islam movement taking hold that could stretch to pakistan and afghanistan in the east, up through uzbekistan, chechnya etc in the north and all the way across through northern africa, including egypt, basically surround Israel and Southern europe - hence the US determination that Turkey be admitted to the EU and held by its laws rather than be rejected and form a larger alliance. So as long as Iran struts around for a while publicly but plays the game in private no probs. Mind you, the author reckons that the US have had broad plants ready to invade every country since world war two, and as time goes on, some get more specific ;-)
