Why can't the U.S.A. have problems like this?

Seriously.  Just the idea of monkeys roaming wild.  Read on, and you'll discover they're training bigger monkeys to beat up the smaller monkeys.  Seriously.  Best urban problem ever.

Monkeys in India
Delhi has long struggled to cope with the marauding monkeys
The deputy mayor of the Indian capital Delhi has died a day after being attacked by a horde of wild monkeys.

SS Bajwa suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the first-floor terrace of his home on Saturday morning trying to fight off the monkeys.

The city has long struggled to counter its plague of monkeys, which invade government complexes and temples, snatch food and scare passers-by.

The High Court ordered the city to find an answer to the problem last year.

Solution elusive

One approach has been to train bands of larger, more ferocious langur monkeys to go after the smaller groups of Rhesus macaques.

The city has also employed monkey catchers to round them up so they can be moved to forests.

But the problem has persisted.

Culling is seen as unacceptable to devout Hindus, who revere the monkeys as a manifestation of the monkey god Hanuman, and often feed them bananas and peanuts.

Urban development around the city has also been blamed for destroying the monkeys' natural habitat.

Mr Bajwa, a member of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is survived by his wife and a son, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Oh, good God. That SO sounds like a Monty Python skit.

I can see it now. It'd be like, Terry Jones and Eric Idle dressed as old ladies standing by a casket in a funeral home:

"So, tell me, dear- how did he die?"
"*sobs* Oh... it was just too awful. My dear ol' Jasper... he was attacked by a horde of wild monkeys!"
"Oh, goodness! You poor thing. How unfortunate. And he was so young too."
"Yes, yes. They just ripped him apart. No mercy."
"Och, the little beasties."
"Should be laws against that sort of thing, you know."
"Yes, yes..."

BWHAHAHA! *snort*

Sorry. Sometimes I amuse myself a little too much.

But yeah... how odd. And since they're religious symbols- they can't be destroyed. How unfortunate. I wonder if they'll start making Monkey Repellant to secure the populous from these nasty little creatures?

That's awesome. I bet it *is* a Python skit :P

We do have problems like this here, except the monkeys are human.

Exactly, which automatically disqualifies them from the aww-isn't-that-cute-the-way-they're-beating-up-that-old-man clause of acceptable urban crime :)

Yeah, monkeys are much more aesthetically pleasing as well!

That article is all kinds of funny. Wow.
I can't believe one of the solutions is to get bigger monkeys; how in the world would that help the problem?

This article equals all kinds of awesome. Thanks for the chuckle.

Then the bigger monkeys will start beating people. This is probably how Planet of the Apes got started :P

haha. That's true.

that picture on the bbc's site with the monkey leaping with the baby monkey attached to his stomach is fucking awesome. Thank you for this article. I read it aloud to my roommates and we all laughed and envisioned scenario's involving monkeys taking over. it was a good 8 minutes of pure fun.

Glad for the laughs!

That's a WAAAY better picture than the one in my post! Grrr BBC for changing it! Grrrr!

My favorite line: ...to train bands of larger, more ferocious langur monkeys to go after the smaller groups of Rhesus macaques.

Throughout history, that has NEVER worked with ANY set of animals :P
