The way I find to best describe it is similar to the way dreams work - there is a universal structure to dreams, they work the same way for everyone, but the language is different. A dog to you means something else to another person. Santa Claus in your dream would mean something different to you than it would to me. Like a foreign language - the structure may be the same but the vocabulary is different for every person. Such, people experience similar things on hallucinogens, but the exact language is very personal.
