The Public Sphere

I wish that I could type in my classes with the knowledge that the people behind me weren't reading what I write.

I've come a long way. I used to hate having conversations on the bus or in restaurants because I knew people were eavesdropping. Probably because I spent so much of my socially-stunted youth eavesdropping on other people who didn't think or care that other people were listening to their conversations.

In high school, I was a virtual nobody, but I knew an awful lot about what was going on, secret whispered things, because people just assumed I wasn't listening.

Oh, the things I knew.

Your grade should be based on your ability to argue for a better grade. Not.

Someone in my anthro class sent this around to the entire class:

Dear Class 105,

I sent Dr. H an email tonight about the this class. I feel, as I'm sure many of you do, that this class required a lot of work! After reviewing my current grades and finding out that its only possible for me to get a C in this class I have asked Dr. H to remove the lowest test grade as a favor to the students of 105.

IF you think this is a good idea, then unite with me, and email Dr. H. If enough of us stand together maybe we can make a difference!

Thanks for your time!

"Dr. H" was very clear at the beginning of the semester: there are 200 points... 3 tests at 50 points each and 50 points for the lab. There was almost no homework (two small lab assignments) plus reading and lectures. I don't think this class "required a lot of work." I thought it was pretty average. Yes, you had to learn a lot of material, but THAT'S THE POINT OF SCHOOL. Egads.
